"We never give recommendations. People don't take them anyway. We simply create a space so that people see more than they were seeing before and they spontaneously make better decisions, become more collaborative, and more productive."

Group Process Consulting is a behavioral science firm that draws from the fields of group dynamics, psychology, sociology, and adult education to develop new processes, organizational designs, and group skills that enhance our mutual quality of life, work, and society. We offer our services to a wide variety of organizations: large, small, privately held, publicly traded, government, and non-profit. We create workshops, seminars, books, and interventions thatÊ prompt introspection, re-evaluation and positive changes in attitudes and behavior. Everything we do is developed collaboratively. Please explore this website and use our comments page to send your questions, thoughts, comments, success stories, and concerns. We welcome the dialogue. Learning is a social process, after all.

Philosophy

If we can make a difference in one day, then we consider that a job well done. We will always recommend the minimum amount of consulting necessary to make a difference. This holds our feet to the fire to continue to develop powerful cutting edge training processes. We transfer knowledge and skills as quickly as possible into the organization. As far as we are concerned, the sooner a group doesn't need us, the better.

We never give recommendations. People don't take them anyway. We simply create a space so that people see more than they were seeing before and they spontaneously make better decisions, become more collaborative, and more productive. Whether the group needs to take a long, hard look in a mirror or they need to listen to other groups, we specialize in helping people see past limiting beliefs and faulty assumptions.

Our methods focus on the norms that groups have developed. We highlight counter-productive norms so they can be removed and give people the opportunity to have a successful experience with new norms.

As far as changing an organization, we feel that people will change only if the new way really works. Build it and they will come-- If they don't come, you didn't build it!Ê We concentrate on building things that work and let the rest fall into place.

Founder's Bio

Annette Simmons, M. Ed. President, Group Process Consulting

Annette Simmons is a behavioral science consultant and author of A Safe Place for Dangerous Truth: Using Dialogue to Overcome Fear & Distrust (AMACOM, May/1999) and Territorial Games: Understanding and Ending Turf Wars at Work (AMACOM, 1997). She is President of Group Process Consulting (Greensboro, NC) and combines public speaking, writing, consulting and constant research and development to serve organizations seeking to increase workgroup cooperation for bottom-line results. Before becoming a consultant she was based in Melbourne, Australia working in international business throughout Europe, South-east Asia, and the Pacific. She worked for Ericsson (telecommunications) and J. Walter Thompson (advertising) developing and implementing marketing strategies based on consumer behavior theory and research. In 1991, Annette returned to the U.S.A. to pursue formal study of human behavior in business. In 1993, she completed her graduate studies in both adult education and psychology, earning a Master's Degree in Training and Development from North Carolina State University. (Her Bachelors Degree in Business is from Louisiana State University, 1983.) She then taught leadership and provided organizational consulting through Farr Associates of Greensboro, NC before forming her own consulting firm, Group Process Consulting in 1997.

Foundational work on A Safe Place for Dangerous Truths began in 1993, when Annette wrote her thesis on "Dialogue." Her experiments and on-going research since that time are reflected in the practical nature of her books. Her passionate curiosity in "what goes wrong" fueled a three-year study into the phenomena called "turf wars" which launched her into national prominence when Territorial Games: Understanding and Ending Turf Wars at Work was published in October of 1997. It has since been translated into several languages including Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese. Annette has been featured on CNBC's Power Lunch, various radio programs, and quoted in Fortune, Working Woman, The Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, and dozens of other newspapers and magazines. She now travels internationally to present her provocative insights and practical solutions drawn from a deep understanding of psychology, adult education, and group dynamics. Recent speaking engagements include the International Organizational Development Association Conference in Budapest, Hungary, the Monash Mt. Eliza Business School's Asia Pacific Conference in Melbourne, Australia, the American Management Association's 69th Human Resource Convention, and several Excellence in Government Conferences.

Annette's new book, The Story Factor: Inspiration, Influence, and Persuasion through the Art of Storytelling (Perseus Books, Dec, 2000) combines her understanding of the psychology of persuasion with the art of storytelling in a powerful "how-to" book that breaks new ground in the application of emotional intelligence at work.
