| Here are stories of famous heretics, retold to see if there is something we can learn about wanting to change the world without going the martyr's route. As we live the life of modern day heretics - dedicated to improving society, organizations, and our own communities-we need all the help and support we can get. Read the stories, post your thoughts, and read the comments of others. This section is dedicated to increasing our numbers and supporting anyone of good intention that needs support. The good news is you don't have to end up being burned at the stake. Please, don't give up. When I first read Art Kleiner's book "The Age of Heretics" I thought, "O dear, this is me. I'm a heretic." All of the "change agents" that Kleiner profiled, Lewin, Schein, NTL founders, McGregor, Argyris were my personal heroes. I suddenly realized I've dedicated my life to trying to "save the world." How naive. How embarrassing. Every book I've written, every workshop I've designed, every training I've run are all designed to re-humanize decision making, blend compassion back into accountability, and encourage creativity in the workplace. My experiences of turf wars, non-compliance, personal attacks, and brick walls merged into a lifelong battle against...What? Who? Why am I so driven to change things? And more importantly, WHO is trying to stop me? ...Stop us? Our enemies are cynicism, fear, selfishness, depression and denial - whether these emotions occur in others or in ourselves. I'm no Polyanna. I know there is evidence that the world is "going to hell in a hand basket," that either through corporate greed, war or environmental disaster we will destroy ourselves. But this is what I believe: I believe that our next stage of evolution will be behavioral/spiritual, not physical. Instead of an opposing thumb, our next survival challenge demands that we develop new collaborative behaviors to replace mindless cynicsm. And regardless of whether we get there or not -I know which team I want to play on. I am dedicated to helping organizations, individuals, and communities learn to collaborate. And if this collaboration begins to erode the self-interests of an elite few...so be it. I'll weather the storm. I just don't want to do it alone. Join me. I want to encourage you to re-discover your hope. I received a letter recently that reads: "I once aspired to similar heights but I'm afraid corporatism ground it's powerful heel into my optimism and I now languish in the league of coulda-beens; a born and bred capitalist marooned on a sea of greed and bullshit and trying to re-evaluate his value system." It doesn't have to be that way. There is strength in numbers. Use this place to re-connect and tap into your strength. Offer your strength to others. Ask for help when you need it. But please, don't give up. Let's change the world. What else you got to do today? |
