Public SpeakingAnnette Simmons, M.Ed. is ready to help you "stir the pot" at your conference or off-site with a thought-provoking keynote speech, or practical "how-to" break-out sessions on:Territorial Games: The Saboteur of CollaborationPower, position, property. It's been the name of the game throughout human history. And now territorial instincts are showing up more than ever as "people fight for more of the less they are supposed to be doing more with!"Anyone that needs cooperation across departmental, functional or international boundaries in spite of cultural differences needs to better understand the human dynamics that divides "us" from "them" - even when it is in our own best interests to work together. Discover how to tame the warring tribes by learning about the emotional origins of turf wars, and the ten territorial games (like camouflage, occupation, shunning, intimidation, etc.) that these emotions generate. Understanding the territorial dynamics that can hi-jack common sense will help you dismantle departmental, regional or pre-merger boundaries, diffuse the empire builders, and prevent 'silo' effects from sabotaging team efforts. Creating a Safe Place for Dangerous Truth - How to Break the "Rules" and Win---If the truth will set us free...Where is it? Who has it? and how will we know it when we see it? If you feel like it's been too long since your workgroup felt safe enough to tell the truth, it's time to brush up on your dialogue skills.Dialogue is how we as adults learn. Forget the "fountain-head/empty-head" model. Real learning is a social process. As fast as our world is changing, we must constantly link our brains with others and trade what we know for what they know -- in real time. Today, what you know depends not only on who you know, but how recently you spoke to them, and how much they chose to tell you. Too often, speaking the "truth" is perceived career suicide. Yet truth-telling is desperately needed if we are to move past current levels of frustration and disillusionment. Dialogue is a way for a work group to get "un-stuck" when frustration and apathy threatens forward progress. Annette Simmons will explore some of the dangerous truths currently sabotaging the wordplace, the risks and rewards of truth telling, and the art and practice of creating a place safe enough so that "truths" do not deteriorate into blame sessions, scape-goating, or hopelessness. Genuine dialogue is a way to turn dangerous truths into shared responsibility. Influencing Others - What's the Story? The people you want to influence don't want more information - they want faith. Faith in you, your ideas, your plan...your story. How can you tell your story in a way that is compelling? believable? long lasting? Discover how to tell a story that awakens people's faith in you.Every human being has a story to tell. Story is how we give meaning to our work, our ideas, our lives. People crave meaning. They will pursue almost any "what" if you deliver a meaningful "why" through the story you tell. Armed with a powerful story unbearable frustrations become tolerable and impossible odds seem less daunting. Storytelling is an ancient art easily adapted to today's world. Once you understand what makes a story compelling you will see opportunities in every area of your life where you can use story to create the results you desire. Imagery, metaphor, and emotion awaken the senses and light the fires of imagination. Trade in your "soapbox" for the flute of the Pied Piper. Annette Simmons, a dynamic speaker, is described by a recent audience as:

One-day WorkshopsOne-day WorkshopsWhat a difference a day can make. When you need results fast, consider bringing GPC in to facilitate one day with your workgroup. Dialogue Session "If a group can discuss the undiscussable, they can solve the unsolveable." This accelerated training session begins by highlighting covert behaviors currently sabotaging collaboration (territorial games). By developing a blame-free environment the group is given the opportunity to temporarily call a truce long enough to handle divisive issues. After the end of the session, the group examines what they have learned in terms of next steps. The goal is for people to feel better about each other and their goals so they can get back to work, regain their enthusiasm, and/or figure out what to do next. (Up to fifty people can be included in one dialogue) Influencing without Authority - What's the Story? "People want to know who you are and why you are here-What's your story?" This one-day workshop teaches influence via the powerful model of storytelling. In the process of "getting their story straight" individuals begin to examine outdated assumptions about influence. This course includes the six principles of storytelling and specific skills in the oral art of storytelling. Using these new principles and skills each individual learns how to tell the most influential story of all "Who are you? and Why are you here?" in a way that loosens old victim stories and miraculously enhances the group's mutual respect and mutual trust. Project Length ConsultingGPC offers project-length consulting services to help with corporate culture change; mergers; new systems integration; and/or re-organization efforts. All projects begin with a collaboratively designed self-diagnostic process so the group can compare their self-diagnosis with observable evidence. Behavior change is stimulated when the group takes time to dialogue about desired changes in beliefs and behaviors and what that means in real terms. GPC facilitates the design and implementation of a process rather than delivering a process. The two basic designs below are tailored specifically to meet the needs of the group.Across the Lines Cooperation - A six-month process that uses a survey to give groups measurable data on the difference between how they see themselves and how the rest of the organization sees them in terms of "game playing." The design produces simultaneous reports for each group to reduce blame and shift perceptions from internal "enemies" to fighting the "enemy" of turf wars. Through facilitated sessions everyone is asked to play fewer games and demonstrate measurable improvement within six months. A second survey is then administered and compared to the base-line survey in facilitated sessions. This process requires the participation of a cross-functional task force to tailor the survey, help implement the survey and co-facilitate debriefing sessions. (For groups of 200-600 people internal website-facilitated feedback is recommended.) Senior Team Feedback Process - A three-month process specifically designed to give senior management reliable feedback on how they are perceived by the rest of the organization. Confidential interviews with a cross-section of employees builds a compelling snapshot of the beliefs and perceptions that help or hinder the senior team's success. We discover what they think is working, what they believe is not working, where the bottlenecks are, current perceptions of the leadership team, and the believability factor of current statements of strategy and vision. The senior team is facilitated through a self-examination process and coached in how to respond to this information in a way that increases organizational success, builds trust, and strengthens credibility of the leadership team.
