NOT A TEAM PLAYER
Abstract
Performance – good, bad, or indifferent – is related to employee emotions. There are few more emotional interactions a boss can have with an employee than a performance review. Since these emotions are predictable why not factor them into your system? Responding to the emotional reactions of an employee validates his/her feelings and keeps those feelings in the loop of your influence as a boss. Ignore their feelings and you leave those feelings to run amuck. Decreasing focus on measurable factors is necessary in order to increase focus on un-measurable but important factors like an employee’s emotional response to the performance evaluation experience and the impact this experience has on the relationship between boss and employee.
